YouTube Shorts: Everything You Need to Know... So Far!
- Nope, I'm afraid to say YouTube shorts don't count towards the watch time you need to monetize your channel. (Indistinct)That's all you needed to know, right? (upbeat music) So then, YouTube Shorts, as of time of recording it hasn't officially been released as a content creation tool, except for in India. This is a preview of the tool itself. It includes a multi segment camera, music recording, speed controls, a timer and will most likely mimic a lot of what TikTok already does. According to
via YouTube community post on YouTube Shorts, I'll leave a link to this just below the like button, this feature should now be available to all creators in India. Now it's important to note that we're talking about the YouTube Shorts camera which is a content creation tool that's not currently available to everybody but make sure to subscribe to us right now because we will let you know as soon as it's globally released. What is available to absolutely everybody right now is the abil ity to see
these YouTube Shorts. What any user of the YouTube mobile app can now do is start watching a video and then swipe down to this shelf called stories and short videos. This is your gateway into videos that are filmed in a vertical format and are 60 seconds or less. All you need to do is swipe up and you'll either see another YouTube Short or a YouTube story, which will be 15 seconds long. If it is a story, you can swipe left to see more videos from the same creator, while s wiping up will show you
more videos from any creator. If you stumble upon a video you particularly enjoy, you can tap on their channel icon and it will show you all of the YouTube Shorts they have on their channel. If you wanted to see all of a channels content, you would need to tap on their channel icon again from this screen. (upbeat music) All right, folks, this is the really important part, so do pay attention. Even though not everyone, as of time of recording, has access to tha t YouTube Shorts camera content
creation tool, everybody can still create YouTube Shorts and the best news is every creator is eligible to create a YouTube Short. There are no minimum requirements for subscribers or views, if you start a YouTube channel today you can make YouTube Shorts. The rules are pretty simple, for your video to be eligible as a YouTube Short, it must be recorded in a vertical format and it must be 60 seconds or less. In some of the documentation, YouTube ha s been recommending creators include #Shorts in
the video title or description but at this point it seems optional. I say that because I've seen new videos that don't include #Shorts in the title or description appear in that shelf and videos from years ago before YouTube shots was even a thing also appearing in that shots. And that is currently one of the challenges and confusions with YouTube shots any video that is in a vertical format and is less than 60 seconds long is eligible to appear on that shelf. But nobody quite knows how and why
YouTube decides what videos appear on that shelf. It's a part of the YouTube discovery algorithm that we're all trying to still understand(Indistinct)later. (upbeat music) What is the most important thing about a YouTube video besides the content? Usually the answer would be from now, however, not when it comes to YouTube shots. And here's why. - [Voiceover] This is a YouTube shots video that we fully optimize with a title d escription, video tags, and they lovely from now, the problem is from
nails are landscaping design. Whereas YouTube shorts are very much portrait in format. So by the time these videos end up on that content shelf in the YouTube app, the thumbnail has been removed. And what you're left with is a random freeze frame from the video itself. - That gives me cold shivers as well. So if you can't control what YouTube decides is your thumbnail. What have you got left to play with video ti tle? The video title is the one thing you control and it has to be punchy. It has to
grab a user's attention. It needs to create emotional intrigue and it needs to fit the last thing. You wanted to have an incomplete title on your YouTube shot and you have less than 40 characters to play with. That is a challenge. (upbeat music) When atypical video is launched on YouTube, it will see an initial surgeon views or subscribers receive their notifications and YouTube tests. The video in br owse features, this is often a crucial period in a video's life. Not so much when it comes to
YouTube shots while yes, you still may get that initial surge of views from subscribers. The YouTube shots effect could kick in days later on when it does boil. You'll know about it. We have seen countless examples of this now channels with less than a thousand subscribers test YouTube shorts. And within the first week YouTube dumps thousands of views all at once into the video. And then j ust as quickly, the view tap is turned off. And how do we know all of these are YouTube shots views? Well,
for that, you need to check the traffic sources every time this view spike occurs all of use come from direct and unknown sources. - Now, of course you are right to be a little cautious at this point, direct an unknown views as a traffic source could mean something entirely different even a little suspicious. But I have seen this pattern so many times over the last week and con firmed it with our own YouTube shot video. That currently is a way YouTube is tracking YouTube shots, views. Hopefully
we're going to make the data a little more useful in the future but for now that's all we've got the problem with the data or lack of is caused by the discovery of the content. This stories and shot video shelf is a brand new gateway or entry point into video content. You don't search for YouTube shots content. You're watching a nother video and you tap on that shel f and you're brought into the YouTube shots, media playing experience. And once there you don't choose what you want to watch
next based on suggestions, YouTube decides for you. And so when it comes to working out how to get your content to appear as a YouTube shot it's going to require a whole brand new way of thinking and approaching the YouTube platform. And for those channels who have been experimenting with YouTube shots, especially small channels the results have been abs olutely phenomenal. - [Voiceover] VidIQ, regular bad. Lori has been chipping away at her Sims game channel for the past year, slowly but
steadily growing. Then a month ago, she tried her first shot video and boom 10,000 views. Since then, she's repeated the idea of doing time-lapse videos of character makeovers on the Sims and each one outperforms her channel average by thousands of views. If you want an example of adapting your channel to short form video content, this is the perfect demonstration. The next one, even I find hard to believe it was just an event Minecraft channel up until a month ago when they started
experimenting with short form content. No problem, sir. How about a million views? No day 2 million. How about 3 million views? Oh, and he can take all of these as well. In total, you're talking about over 10 million views, pumped into a channel, making short form videos. And if we're being somewhat critical it's not even really v ertical format content. It's landscape screen recordings. Crowbarred into a portrait style video. If this is all YouTube shorts driven content this creator well and
truly hit the algorithmic Jack (upbeat music) - YouTube shorts represents a new opportunity for creators just like you and me to create valuable content and reach potentially a brand new audience. Unfortunately, at the same time YouTube shorts represents an opportunity to create more junk because it's easy to make in l ess time, but what's even worse. And it's happened at it. Alarming pace already is the invasion of TikTok content. Now I'm not necessarily talking about TikTok style
contents because VAT can be very good. And that's why YouTube we're trying to muscle in on this territory. What I'm talking about is content lifted directly from TikTok and uploaded onto YouTube. This TikTok up video is now masquerading as a YouTube shot, and it has brought in over 700,000 views in a week f or this creator. The problem is it's not this creator's content. I'm sure the original author appreciates the credit though. And yes, I am being sarcastic. What I quickly discovered is that
once you are in the YouTube shots player, almost every other video is something directly ripped from TikTok. Well, YouTube does have robust copyright systems and content ID in place. One thing I don't think it's capable of doing very well is identifying creators copyrighted content from an entir ely different platform. I think this is something YouTube need to get a handle on and quickly because you might be creating a brand new original YouTube shot's content but it's been drowned out by all of
this ripped off TikTok content that nobody can do anything about. (upbeat music) Well, since you can't upload YouTube shots as normal videos, you can monetize them like you would any normal video on YouTube. However I have yet to see a single advert be it pre-roll mid-roll or graphic al in nature appear during my YouTube shots viewing experience. I'm Marvin happy to be corrected on this, but as a time of recording I don't believe you are able to earn ad sense revenue from videos viewed as YouTube
shots. And to be honest, right now, your primary concern shouldn't be how to make money out of YouTube shots. It should be about testing the platform and making it work for your audience and building a community from it. Now then, what if you haven't monetized your channe l Does any of this watchtime count? (upbeat music) This is our brand new YouTube channel where we only post videos that qualify a shot. And if we click on the monetization section of a YouTube video you can see that we are
already earning hours towards that goal of 4,000. Thr problem is none of these videos are being watched technically as shorts they are being watched as regular videos and through YouTube workshops and numerous comments on our videos creators are confirming tha t videos watched as YouTube shorts do not currently count to watchtime you need for monetization So when it comes to monetization, YouTube shorts are a bit of a blind spot (upbeat music) YouTube shots are going to lower. Your average view
duration that's unavoidable. Now could that possibly send negative signals to YouTube about your channel? Maybe we can't confirm this at the same time you're playing Russian roulette with your YouTube audience. They subscribed to watch long form co ntent. And now they're going to be getting notifications about short form content we'll lay tolerated. Also making short videos could have the same impact as going viral on your channel. You cover a particular topic and then you drift onto another
topic because it's trending. Your video goes viral. And then all of a sudden you're a channel about a topic you were never really invested in. What if that happens with a short you're making long form content one of those shot videos go es viral and now everybody's expecting this TIkTok content from you all of a sudden again, you're possibly splitting your audience. On the other hand starting a new channel is always a huge challenge because it's difficult to bring your audience from one channel
to another, unless you have a huge community. Like in the case of MrBeast, we here at vidIQ are actually testing both. We've uploaded some of our shots to the main channel and they're actually doing pretty well. To be honest , they're not going viral but we are having some shorts success. On the other hand on the shorts channel we're just putting all sorts of stuff on there and having some fun, but it is a real challenge going from thousands of views per video to a dozen right now. And finally,
we often get asked this question a lot. How do I get more views? It's a very basic question. And a very simple answer right now is test YouTube shorts. If that's all you want views and you'd probably have more su
