How to Fix Oculus Quest 2 Controller Thumbstick Drift AND Clean Black Scuff Marks on Quest 2
when it comes to maintaining the quest to and fixing problems there are two things i hear most often the first is how do i clean these ugly scuff marks on the white plastic and the second being how do i fix that thumbstick controller drift now just so happens i have both problems with my controllers so i thought why not make a video on it to show you how i fix the problem at least now just bear in mind i am not professional so the way i fix things is not necessarily the only way to fix them nor
is it the best way it's just the way i've done it to fix the problems that i have so while as you can see in the video i got good results following these methods and i think you will too just bear in mind i am no expert so how do you remove those black marks and scuffs from your controllers or even your headset although you are more likely to get them on your controllers since you're more likely to bash these into things so you can see i have some faint black marks along here and i h ave a darker
one just there so i'm going to start by doing first try just some ordinary glass cleaner like here i will just use a microfiber cloth it hasn't done much it's still it's still there so if you're still seeing those scuff marks on the plastic you might like to try toothpaste so this can act as a mild abrasive and i'll just put a bit on a cloth like that maybe a bit too much there so there we go that that should be enough i think okay so that has made a difference it's still there you can see it
faintly but it is quite a bit lighter than it was before so if two-faced doesn't do the trick then what you can try is isopropyl alcohol so i've got some isopropyl alcohol here you can find ipa in most hardware stores now i've been using ipa for a while to clean plastics amongst other things and i've never had any issues and there you go it's pretty much gone so every time i've had scuff marks i've used this method with success i don't know if it will get rid of all scuff marks 100 but i think
for the vast majority of marks it will remove them if not completely it will make them look a lot better at least if your scuff mark still hasn't gone just repeat the process until it does go glass cleaner toothpaste then isopropyl alcohol and if whatever reason it doesn't make much of a difference then it might be the case that you need something more heavy duty which is a bit beyond the scope of this video now i just may have a small disclaimer d on't use any liquid whatsoever to clean your
lenses even water shouldn't be used you should be using a dry microfiber cloth or a specialized bit of equipment made to clean lenses like the vr lens pen just use this method to clean away any scuffs on the hard white plastic of the quest 2 and nothing else recently the thumb stick on my left controller was showing some pretty serious thumbstick drift it got to the point where it was hard to play any games at all because my character w ould just go all over the screen and it's quite frustrating
so i tried to fix it i'm going to show you some of the methods i tried first then we're going to go on to the more advanced method that i haven't tried yet i'm hoping will work so first before you try any of these methods make sure the battery is removed from the battery compartment and so what i first tried was isopropyl alcohol what i did was i sprayed the isopropyl alcohol along the base of the thumbstick while moving the thumbstick around to work inside and pressing the thumbstick in then i
waited for a few minutes maybe about 10 minutes for the isopropyl alcohol to dry before trying the controller and i didn't really find any difference to be honest it was pretty much the same as it was before so then i tried this special contact cleaner now this is not wd-40 this is specialized contact cleaner if you use wd-40 you'll be running into problems so make sure you use this contact cleaner and nothing el se so again i did the same thing as the isopropyl alcohol i sprayed it along the
base of the thumbstick twiddle the thumbstick around pressed it in to work inside now the can i have has a spray nozzle what you really want is a straw nozzle like this so you can actually get it inside the thumbstick more accurately again don't use wd-40 make sure you use the specialized contact cleaner so once i used the contact cleaner again i waited about 10 minutes for it to dry off and it actual ly did make a little bit of a difference it wasn't perfect but it seemed to have some
effect then i used this air blower so what i did was exactly like the other methods i just pressed in the thumbstick and blew air using this special machine into the base of the thumbstick to try to dislodge any dust or dirt that was there now again that didn't make much of a difference so now moving on to the advanced method but before i go on to that i just like to mention if you are exp eriencing thumbstick drift then probably the next best thing to do would be to contact oculus support they
may be able to help you here that you may be able to send your controller off for it to get fixed by them and then send it back which is probably the best option but if whatever reason you don't want to do that or they are unable to help you then this might be something that's worth trying so now onto the more advanced method so like i said i haven't done this before so we'll s ee how we go so what i'm going to want to do is try to remove that black disk if i can remove that black disk i'll have
better access to the thumb stick and can hopefully better dislodge than any dirt that's between the contacts that's causing the thumbstick drift so i'll take my standing knife i'm also going to dip it into the isopropyl alcohol because i know there is some adhesive beneath that disc and the isopropyl alcohol will help dissolve that adhesive as well as lubricate the knife hopefully make it easier to slip in underneath so i just like to mention that my goal here using the standing knife is not
to take the disc off it's actually just to get underneath it so then i can get a tool underneath to pry it off so as long as i can make a gap big enough that's my goal it actually wasn't that hard to make that gap it just took a bit of time and patience just take your time and work your way around the edge until you've got a big enough gap to fit somethi ng in there to pry off okay so i seem to have made a little gap with a stanley knife now what i want to try is i'm going to get this flat head
screwdriver and try to pry it open by wedging it underneath and rotating the screwdriver this might be it there we go okay so there is the black disk that's on top of your controller there and so now we have access to that thumbstick now what i'm going to do next is i'm going to try to take that thumbstick off so if i can give it a tug oh the re we go that was that was very easy compared to getting that black disc off so there is a close-up of the thumbstick you can see it's a lot more exposed
now so if i do what i was doing before hopefully i'll have a better chance of dislodging any dirt inside so all i did was exactly as i was doing before rotating the thumbstick pushing it in while blowing air into it then i blew the contact cleaner inside i didn't use the isopropyl alcohol because that didn't work so well so i just used the contact cleaner then i also got a brush as well and try to get the bristles inside of the mechanism also finally clean the cap on the thumbstick as is a bit
dirty and i thought while i was there i might as well do that as well okay so now time for a test i'm going to try my best to cause the thumbstick to drift yeah so it looks at least for now it looks like it's fixed it i don't know how long this will last i guess if it starts playing up again i could always do the same thing but for now it looks like it's fixed and it's a lot better than it ever was before so i'm happy with that so there were my methods on how to clean those scuff marks off and
fix controller drift did it work for you did it not work for you or maybe you have a different method let me know in the comment section below love to hear thoughts as always thanks for watching take care and i'll catch you in the next one [Music] you Inglês
